Our sick little Nolan

Here is a picture of our Little Nolan on Valentine's Day afternoon.  He was happy and seemed pretty healthy.

  That evening he started to get kind of wheezy.  By the middle of the night I was watching his little tummy for retractions and he was struggling to breathe some.  So the next day I decided to get him into his doctor and have them check him out.  He was between 6 and 7 weeks old.  They tested him for RSV.  That came back negative.  Then the doctor decided they wanted to have his blood drawn and a chest xray to check for pneumonia.  So we went to the hospital for that.  Lauren was a trooper throughout the entire day...thank goodness!! 

We ran back home and I fed Nolan, Lauren and I and then they wanted him back at the doctor again.  The pneumonia and other tests came back negative.  Thankfully Adam was able to come home early to stay with Lauren....and thankfully he remembered Addie had an early out..........I totally forgot!!

Back at the Dr. office they checked him again and decided to have him do a breathing treatment and check his oxygen saturation level.  They had been checking his oxygen sat level all day and Nolan's fingers are so tiny that the machine wasn't registering numbers that seemed right. 

After the breathing treatment his numbers came up dangerously low and so they put him on oxygen and that brought the levels up again.  Dr. D. wanted him to be hospitalized to be observed for his oxygen levels which meant a ride in the ambulance to Blank Children's hospital in Des Moines.

Thankfully Mammy was in Des Moines and ran out to Osky to be with the girls and I rode with Nolan to Des Moines and Adam and Aunt Alicia met us at the hospital.  They observed him all night and his levels stayed in the 90's which is normal.

The doctors were fantastic.  We went home the next day and he did improve.  This was the first though of a quite a few doctor appointments for wheezing that he had over the next two months. 

This is a picture from a month later when he was VERY sick again.  This is the pediatric nebulizer mask that we had to use on Nolan for breathing treatments.  Not a fun picture....but something we will remember doing with Nolan for hours during this time!
